"Natives on the Ouse River, Van Diemen's Land 1838"
2001-04-01 until 2001-06-24
Art Gallery of New South Wales
Sydney, , AU Australia

John Glover arrived in Australia in 1831, the same year that the last of the Bangenerwappo or Big River tribe were rounded up from the Ouse River by George Augustus Robinson for resettlement on Flinders Island. Seven years later the artist painted this scene of Aboriginal people in an untouched landscape. This focus exhibition will assess the painting within the Aboriginal and European settler context at the time as well as in light of current reconciliation debates.
