"Faces and Figures: Contemporary Photography in Scandinavia"
2001-04-20 until 2001-06-10
Scandinavia House
New York, NY,
USA United States of America
This exhibition comprises approximately fifty photographic works
by twelve photographers from all five Nordic countries. The
works, in both black-and-white and color, touch upon such
psychological themes as identity and disguise, inner life versus
outer appearance, and the role of history in the life of the
modern individual. The exhibition includes work by both
established and emerging artists, and represents a broad spectrum
of photographic practices, ranging from photojournalism and
documentary work to ironic social critique, personal expression, and
lyrical art photography. Many of the artists are unknown or little-known outside their home countries, and the work they have
produced deserves broader recognition.
The photographers represented in the exhibition are Krass Clement
and Tina Sondergaard, from Denmark; Spessi, Ragnar Axelsson
(Rax), and Einar Falur Ingolfsson, from Iceland; Jorma Puranen and
Esko Mannikko, from Finland; Kare Kivijarvi and Jim Bengston,
from Norway; and Christer Stromholm, Sune Jonsson, and Lars
Tunbjork, from Sweden.
The exhibition is organized by 0ivind Storm Bjerke, director of the
Norsk Museum for Fotografi-Preus Fotomuseum, in Horten,
Norway, and Ann Sass, director of cultural programs and chief
curator, Scandinavia House. A publication, including essays by
Mr. Bjerke and Ms. Sass, biographies and bibliographies on each
artist, and reproductions in color and black-and-white, accompanies
the exhibition.
