"Peter Milton: Visions and Revisions"
2001-05-04 until 2001-06-30
Jack Rutberg Fine Art
Los Angeles, CA, USA United States of America

The work of internationally known artist, Peter Milton, will be featured in an exhibition opening May 4, and extending through June 30, at Jack Rutberg Fine Arts in Los Angeles. This exhibition will feature selected major etchings and drawings by the artist spanning more than 25 years.

The etchings of Peter Milton have long been regarded as being among the most intriguing, if not enigmatic works in American contemporary printmaking. Defying easy categorization, Milton employs complex etching techniques to create works of extreme detail which, while ostensibly rooted in realism, are in fact intricately layered apparitions depicted in altered space and time.

Critically, Peter Milton has been described by noted critics such as Theodore Wolff, as having carved out a unique and distinctive place in 20th Century art...the heir-apparent to the [great lineage of artists who have taken printmaking to unique heights in the history of printmaking]. The Washington Post noted that Peter Milton is the whispering magician of contemporary art. Upon the release of the book Peter Milton: Complete Prints 1960 -1996, the Boston Globe described Milton's prints as ...surreal, touching, disturbing, and beautiful to behold. New York Times critic, John Russell described these provocative images as ...remarkable both for power and straightforwardness of feeling...

Peter Milton's works are included in more than 150 museum collections throughout the world, including the Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, The National Gallery, The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, The Tate Gallery, British Museums, Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris and Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

In 1998, San Francisco's De Young Museum presented a major retrospective exhibition of Peter Milton's prints. In the exhibition's accompanying catalogue, curator Robert Flynn Johnson refers to Milton as ...a master in the print world...[whose works'] surreal elements suggest a cross between an Ingmar Bergman film and a Thomas Eakins painting.

Works from the De Young Museum's Retrospective will comprise the Peter Milton exhibition at the Jack Rutberg Gallery. This exhibition will preview Peter Milton's newest etching and most complex work to date.
