"Bauhaus Theater Workshop for Dancers, Actors, Stage Designers, Filmmakers, Musicians and All Others Iinterested"
2001-08-06 until 2001-08-31
Bauhaus Dessau Foundation
Dessau, ,
DE Germany
For the third time, the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation invites dancers, actors,
stage designers, filmmakers, musicians and all others interested to an
interdisciplinary theater workshop in the Bauhaus Building. A three-week
experiment has been planned at the interface of new media, theater and dance
- a field of growing significance for artistic expression in a world where
everyday life is increasingly shaped by technology and the media.
Changes in the city such as we experience daily - and which also constitute
the areas for design, research and instruction at the Bauhaus Dessau - are
the underlying theme of the 3rd Bauhaus Theater Workshop. In today's
dazzling entertainment and achievement-oriented service economy, where and
how can a person find his own individual space and freedom of movement?
The Theater Workshop will experiment with the new possibilities which
computers open up to the performing arts: interactive theater work and
traditional forms of artistic expression are to merge in a synthesis.
The participants have the opportunity to become acquainted with and test a
variety of computer programs used for interactive theater, as well as to use
classic tools of stage design and scenography. It is also a question of
finding out if interactive performance is more than just a trend: will the
computer have a permanent effect on the performing arts?
The outcome of the project will not be a single finished piece, but instead
a performance collage which will be presented both live and on the Internet
to everyone interested.
The team:
Angelika Flaig (scenography, text) is a painter and performance artist from
Stuttgart. For ten years she has directed the group signum+ and presented
many works both at home and abroad.

Frieder Weiß (New Media, Intelligent Theater.) is Palindrome's technical
director. He has been designing computer programs for the stage for years,
and now heads the interaction laboratory at 01plus Institute for Art, Design
and Media Technology in Nuremberg.
Burghard Duhm (dramaturgy, warming up, text) is a cultural scientist. Since
1989 he has worked at the Bauhaus Dessau on numerous projects related to the
fields of culture and communication. Since 1998, the Bauhaus Theater is his
most important sphere of work.

Butch Rovan, from the USA, is a composer, performer and music researcher. He
will develop an interactive soundscape with the participants on the first
days of the Theater Workshop.
