"The Gravity of the Immaterial: Inaugural Exhibition at ICA, Taipei"

The first museum in Taiwan completely dedicated to the exhibition of contemporary art will open to the public May 26, 2001. The Institute of Contemporary Art, know as the ICA, will be a hotbed of activity, bringing together a host of Taiwan and International artists for it¡s Inaugural Exhibition: THE GRAVITY OF THE IMMATERIAL.

The ICA will serve as an international catalyst for art exchange, focusing on the contemporary works of Taiwanese artists and invited international artists. Education will be a key feature to this unique museum and will be an important bridge between artists and community. Using ICA¡œs resources as a vehicle for communication the programs aim to promote public understanding and appreciation of contemporary art, and its relationship to our everyday lives.

The ICA is located in a historic building dating back to the 1930¡œs. It once served as an elementary school and later as the City Hall for the Taipei Government. In 1994 the building was earmarked to become a museum, and in 1999 the ICA began developed.

The opening exhibition The Gravity of the Immaterial explores three themes in contemporary art. The first theme The Communication of Hope explores the culture of community, The Debate with Subjectivity contemplates the development and dilemma of the personal situation and finally Material Touches examines the characteristics and culture of our electronic media. Twenty-six artists hailing from Taiwan, Japan, Holland and America will participate in the exhibition.

The ICA is located at 39 Chang-an West Road, Taipei, Taiwan 103; and is a short walk from the ChungShan MRT station. The museum will officially open to the public Sunday May 27, 2001. The opening reception with the Mayor of Taipei is Saturday May 26, 2001 at 7pm. The hours of the museum will be from 10:00am to 6:00pm Tuesday through Sunday.
