Zhou Jun – Bird’s Nest Project
Rossi and Rossi -
London, UK United Kingdom

China’s rapidly increasing economic growth as well as the lead-up to the Olympics has led to an explosion of construction and development in cities and villages, and this urbanisation is reflected in the work of many Chinese artists including the photographer Zhou Jun. Born in 1965 in Nanjing, Zhou Jun graduated from the Department of Photography at the Art School of Nanjing Normal University. Three solo exhibitions have been held of his photographs in Beijing and Shanghai and he has participated in other group exhibitions in China. Rossi & Rossi are now proud to bring his work to Europe for the first time from 7 to 29 August 2008. Read Indepth Article

SCRATCHING THE SURFACE Vol.1: An Exhibition in Partnership with Spier
AVA - Association for Visual Arts -
Cape Town, ZA South Africa

Scratching the Surface Vol.1 at AVA in Cape Town from August 5 to 21 , 2008, combines new and re-visited visual and performance work by artists working individually and in collaboration, between places on the planet that are becoming less and less disparate as we charge ahead to a global imagining. The result of the first curatorial project of Gabi Ngcobo and Mwenya Kabwe as collective manje-manje projects (m-mp), the exhibition functions as a site for research and experimentation. Triggered by a desire to obliterate - reveal - satisfy - mark - damage, the contagious act of scratching suggests contact between surfaces: walls, grounds, steel, skin etc, the proverbial 'itch' transferred to scratch card and suitcase for the gambler and nomad respectively. INTERVIEW WITH ARTIST SIGAL M. BUSSEL
Laurie Lamson, USA
L.A.-based Sigal Bussel came to her art from a nontraditional background. She earned a BA in Economics from UCLA and an MBA from Harvard Business School. She spent a considerable amount of time volunteering for various public and charitable organizations.
While working on Wall Street, Bussel felt a rising need to make a difference. Art became her way of reaching out to the world. She has exhibited around the U.S, China, Israel and Mexico, and has also been commissioned to work on a number of public art projects. To see more visit www.sigalbussel.com.
Laurie: You just came back from Beijing a couple of months ago?
Sigal: What a remarkable experience. I had a solo exhibition at the Beijing World Art Museum. It was very humbling to be one of the only foreign artists to exhibit during the period leading up to the Olympic games. It made it that much more special.
