"Sculpture by Manuel Sola / 20th Century Avantgarde"
2001-06-04 until 2001-06-24
Michael Dunev Art Projects
Torroella de Montgri, , ES Spain

Sola is heir to a rich sculptural tradition whose origins lie in the revolutionary efforts with objets trouves by Duchamp, Picasso and Schwitters. Using everyday elements and industrial detritus, ancient tools, pieces of metal and river stones , Sola joins this Modernist group with sculptures of an intense vitality, which free from their utilitarian vestiges, emerge like quiet witnesses to some ceremony yet to be realized; they are sentinels of a strange yet familiar culture.

Their strong verticality recall the totems and ceremonial figures of African and Oceanic cutlures, and like them, give material sense to a spiritual world shared by all humanity. They are prayers to a world that is unravelling, presented with humility and simplicity; offerings made with the hope that we learn that our similarities unite us more than the differences that separate us.

The exposition 20th Century Avantgarde presents a selection of works that despite their intimate format reveal a monumental vitality Rooted in Modernism, these works manifest a profound faith in progress. They were created during the first half of the 20th Century and represent a society deeply immersed in the turbulent changes that the new century brought with it: apocalyptic wars, psychoanalysis, the invention of machines and new modes of transport that would forever change the identity of our cities. The periods spent in Paris by each of these artists influenced their work immensely, spreading new artistic movements that were shared across borders resulting in the first globalization of ideas. Among them will be exhibited works by Picasso, Miró, Torres García, Benjamín Palencia, Louis Marcoussis and Julio González.

The exhibitions Manuel Solà and 20th Century Avantgarde will open on Saturday, 2 June and will continue until the 24 of June. Michael Dunev Art Projects is a contemporary art center in Torroella de Montgrí on Spain’s Catalonian Costa Brava dedicated to exhibition programs of contemporary art, art publishing and international artist’s projects.
