"Gerome & Goupil: Art and Enterprise"
2001-06-08 until 2001-08-12
Frick Art and Historical Center
Pittsburgh, PA, USA United States of America

During the latter part of the nineteenth century, the dissemination of French art through the publishing industry created a dramatic rise in demand for the art of the Paris Salon. As a case study of the art market and the fine-art publishing trade, the exhibition focuses on the collaboration between the Salon favorite, Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904), and his publisher and dealer, Adolphe Goupil (1806-1893). Twenty-one paintings by Gérôme and over one hundred Goupil reproductions illustrate the influential Gérôme-Goupil alliance.
