Indepth Arts News: "The Idea of Louis Sullivan" 2001-06-09 until 2001-09-23 Art Institute of Chicago Chicago, IL, USA
In 1956, photographer John Szarkowski published a book documenting the
architecture of Louis Sullivan. This work not only spurred new interest in Sullivan's
career among architects and architectural historians, but also illustrated an aesthetic that
was to have enormous influence on the history of photography when Szarkowski became
the curator of photography at New York's Museum of Modern Art in the early 1960s.
This year, The Idea of Louis Sullivan is being republished, and to mark the occasion, the
Art Institute's Department of Photography—with the collaboration of the Department of
Architecture—will mount an exhibition that will combine vintage prints from
Szarkowski's classic study with Sullivan's own drawings and architectural fragments
drawn from the collection of the Department of Architecture.
