"Women of Tshwane: Artifacts and Art"

Women of Tshwane is an exhibition at the Sasol
Art Museum at the University of Stellenbosch for the period 13 June -
5 August 2001. The Tshwane area includes old Pretoria, Centurion
(to the south), Soshanguve and Temba in the north and Ga-
Rankuwa to the west.
It will be an inter-disciplinary presentation of objects from the
Anthropology collection of the University Museum and works of art
borrowed from public collections. The emphasis is on the area
Tshwane - its cultural history, the ethnological make-up/diversity
and the role of the women as artists/crafts persons in the region
( working and living within the boundaries of the new Greater
Pretoria).
Artists represented are inter-alia the Doyen of South African Art
Bettie Cilliers-Barnard, Erna Bodenstein, Hanneke Benade,
Margaret Gradwell, Margaret Nel, Michelle Nigrini, Henriette Ngako,
Annette Pretorius and Elizabeth Riding. Textiles from the Lerato la
Bana and Mapula projects of the Winterveldt will also be included.
