TheSpace@inIVA presents new work by Colombian artist Carlos Blanco. LA CRUDA
REALIDAD is a commentary on the turbulent political and social issues within
Colombia. Blanco's installation features a group of large inflated figures, an
assembly of breathing portraits of individuals who have an impact on
Colombia's political and social establishment. With LA CRUDA REALIDAD,
Blanco at once comments on his country's political dynamics, and its effects
on the global sphere.
LA CRUDA REALIDAD addresses Blanco's preoccupation with travelling,
migration and displacement. This project forms part of inIVA's Tourist
season, a series of exhibitions, web projects and publications which
explores the ways in which people negotiate new places. The season
highlights the innovative ways artists operate as travellers and visitors,
and seeks to capture their interrogation and absorption of the fundamental
nature of a place.
Blanco's practice has frequently focused on migration and symbols of
transience. Trained as an architect in Bogota, Blanco recently made a series
of inflatable houses, which the artist wore as portable carapaces. His
installations commonly feature a site specific or performance element, and
as an artist and tourist, Blanco often collects visual or aural mementoes
relating to his alien locality.
Carlos Blanco has developed this new body of work as part of a
Gasworks/inIVA International Residency at Gasworks Artists' Studios, London.
Blanco has exhibited widely within Colombia and overseas, most recently at
the 7th Cuban Biennale in 2000. Blanco will be participating in the 2001 Los
Angeles Biennale in July.
