"Contemporary Art Project Series: Millie Chen"
2001-06-21 until 2001-10-14
Art Gallery of Hamilton
Hamilton, ON,
CA Canada
Canadian artist Millie Chen often investigates the ecology of the body through the history of
scientific and social use. She has explored the capacity for tactile materiality to trigger immaterial
sonic vibrations in her recent projects. Viewing her work as a conveyor of psychic and physical
memory, Chen seeks to form an alternative language of visual communication based on the sensual
intelligence of the body.
In this project, conceived for the exhibition space at the Art Gallery of
Hamilton , Chen explores the relationship between seeing and hearing, the shifting from one sense to
another. Through hand constructed instrument-like forms made of spun and cast brass, Chen
focuses on sound, particularly the sound of breath.
