"Stark: A Large Scale Drawing Installation by Jennifer Hicks"
2001-06-27 until 2001-07-07
Mobius
Boston, MA,
USA
Stark consists of large black and white charcoal drawings which
are 15 feet tall by 10 feet wide. The drawings, created on tracing paper,
imbue the gallery space with the chilly feelings of the Provincetown dune
scape during the winter months. The pieces are expanded versions of smaller
works originally conceived outside.
Hicks spent a winter week at the
C-Scape Dune Shack, which lacks heat, running water, and electricity. She
spent the days working outside, drawing the landscape and creating
performance pieces in the dunes. Then in the evening by kerosene light,
Hicks would go over the days creations and write about her experience. The
result is this installation, born out of a beautifully lonely and harsh
environment.
After receiving her BFA/Diploma from Tufts University/School of the
Museum of Fine Arts in Painting and Performance Art, Jennifer Hicks, a
member of the Mobius Artists Group and the Bromfield Art Gallery, went on
to win the Traveling Scholars Award for an installation and performance
called Training for Uncertainty. She also won a grant from Franklin
Furnace in New York City for this particular project. She has had her
paintings shown at many venues throughout the country including The
Conference of World Religions in Chicago and The Museum of Fine Arts in
Boston. Currently, Hicks is exhibiting her work at the Papp Gallery in
SOHO, NYC and at the Fulton Street Gallery in Troy, NY. In addition, Hicks
is certified as a Shintaido instructor and as a Natale Institute Trance
Dance Facilitator. She also has a strong background in various performative
arts, including butoh, classical dance and acting.
