"Squatters 2: Space in Rotterdam and Porto"
2001-07-15 until 2001-09-23
Witte de With Center for Contemportary Art
Rotterdam, , NL

On the occasion of Rotterdam 2001 and Porto 2001, Witte de With and Museu Serralves invited international artists to design projects for the two Cultural Capitals. These projects explore the city, urban space, and the ways in which this space functions in the specific local conditions of Rotterdam and Porto.

Runa Islam (UK) emphasizes the local differences in a side by side screening of two films based on the same script but shot in the respective cities. Damian Ortega (Mexico) organizes in Rotterdam a fund raising project to plant trees in Porto. Francis Al˙s (Belgium, Mexico) shows his archive, including some of his famous walking projects. The singular nature of each work and location gives Squatters a cell-like structure. Each work constitutes a mini-exhibition that claims a specific urban location and imbues it with new meaning. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue which documents all projects. Squatters consists of two parts, Squatters # 1, July 15 - September 24, 2001 With: Francis Al˙s; Juan Cruz; Angela Ferreira; Ceal Floyer; Giuseppe Gabbelone; Runa Islam; Damian Ortega; Miguel Palma; Costa Vece.
