"Call to Artists: Drawing the New Millennium - The Challenge of Media and Idea to the Nature of Drawing"
2001-07-20 until 2001-08-01
Maine Artists Space, Danforth Gallery
Portland, ME, USA United States of America

An exhibition of all mediums at Danforth Gallery by artists residing from New York to Newfoundland. October 12 – November 16, 2001. The Curators for the exhibition are Elizabeth Finch, Curator at the Drawing Center, New York and John Murchie, Independent Curator within the Maritimes and the rest of Canada. As we are entering into a new millennium, our culture is undeniably changing with ever greater swiftness. Drawing offers, as it always has, a profound mirror to that change. All those involved in drawing, in whatever form, are invited to be a part of this dialogue.

On a level with speaking, the act of communication through making marks is a fundamental human instinct. In this humans have forever used the act of drawing as a means to express meaning, emotion and ideas. Currently, the discipline of drawing, is being profoundly effected in numerous ways. With a proliferation of new media , technologies, and diverse approaches, the perception and reality of what constitutes a drawing is rapidly expanding. At the same time, many are looking to, embracing, and expanding upon, the historical approaches to drawing. As such, it seems to be a time when the dialogue between innovation and tradition has never been stronger. This exhibition seeks to explore this dialogue by embracing the breadth of what drawing is. It will do such by exploring the use of new technologies, understanding the impact of drawings continuing traditions, and to engage the expanding range of ideas that are brought to this basic human expression.
