"Morimura Self-Portraits: An Inner Dialogue with Fridao Kahlo"
2001-07-20 until 2001-09-30

In this exhibition Yasumasa Morimura pays homage to Frida Kahlo, the extraordinary Mexican artist
whose life was marked by love, passion, and suffering. This project, which has
been 10 years in the making, includes some 50 large-scale photographs,
video works, and mixed-media works.
Morimura has won worldwide acclaim for his self-portraits, works
that consist of reproductions of famous paintings in which the faces of the
subjects are replaced by the face of the artist. By carrying out detailed
analyses of themes, artists, and historical background, Morimura uncovers the
motives that led to the creation of each work, which he then modifies with a
more idiosyncratic and modern perspective.
