"Let There Be Light: Works by Graham A. Scholes"
2001-07-27 until 2001-08-09
Art Gallery of the South Okanagan
Penticton, BC, CA Canada

Let There Be Light an exhibition of coloured woodblocks by British Columbia artist Graham A. Scholes. This exhibition is the celebration of an recently completed eight year project of creating a series of 35 woodblock prints of the lighthouses on the coast of British Columbia.

Making arrangements with the Canadian Coast Guard, he was able to visit the lighthouses so he can, as he puts it, create his portraits of the lights. Scholes needed to touch his subjects, as it is a way of interpreting and getting in close contact with the stations, experiencing the ambience of each location.

There is also an exhibition of works by Walter J. Phillips 1884 - 1963, an international authority in the art of colour woodcut prints. When comparing Phillips with contemporary artist Graham A. Scholes, we see that the former's legacy is alive and well. Scholes has mastered this challenging medium like few others today.
