"Spirits of Stone"
2001-08-01 until 2001-08-31
Aboriginals: Art of the First Person
Sanibel, FL, USA United States of America

Aboriginals: Art of the First Person will present a show and sale of fetish carvings, Spirits of Stone, by renowned Native American artists from Zuni and Navajo, featuring the unique carvings of Cochiti Pueblo carver, Salvador Romero, starting August 1, 2001. Fetish carvings are based on a Zuni belief that animals struck by lightning have their spirits frozen in stone.

Carvers are able to reveal these spirits and free the powers of wisdom, courage, cunning and tenacity traditionally possessed by the animal that is revealed in the carving.

Carvings range from those with intricate detail by Zuni carvers Dan Quam and Wilfred Cheama to more abstract and primitive creatures by Salvador Romero, who gathers his materials from the hills of his pueblo.
