"Defining Modern: European Design 1880-1930"
2001-08-26 until 2001-11-11
Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
Houston, TX, USA

The years 1880-1930 are considered among the most dynamic and creative periods in modern design history. Several groundbreaking art movements-British Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, Vienna Moderne, and French Art Deco-flourished during this time span. From visiting international expositions, to consulting numerous periodicals, to traveling throughout Europe, designers came into contact with, and were influenced by, a rich variety of styles.

This exhibition, drawn exclusively from the MFAH collection, highlights outstanding examples by design visionaries such as William Morris, Archibald Knox, Carlo Bugatti, Emile Gallé, Josef Hoffmann, and Edgar Brandt. Many of the works are on view for the first time.
