Furniture is the focus of the next exhibition at Dover's Biggs Museum of American Art. Documented chairs made or used in Delaware in the 1700' S are very rare. This sma11 exhibition is the largest group of such chairs ever assembled in one place. Visitors will have the opportunity; to
study how the appearance of chairs changed over time as they look at examples in the Queen Anne and Chippendale styles. The exhibition will exp1ore design and construction characteristics.
Chairs are taken for granted today, but that was not the case in Colonial America. One historian notes that In the mid-1700's, between 65 and 68 per cent of inventories list chairs in Delaware's Kent and New Castle Counties, as wcl1 as in neighbouring Chester County, Pennsylvania, a number that rose to 90 per cent by the year, 1790.
