Powerful buildings, powerful art. The Empire Series at the Empire State
Building is Ethel Lebenkoffs second solo exhibition in one of Manhattans
supreme architectural achievements.
Says Ethel, When I first arrived in New York City, I could see the Empire
State building from my studio window. I found the building beautiful. It was
intimidating, and powerful. I began to develop a relationship with this
edifice. I began playing with it, anticipating its color changes, and
watching the way light fell on it. We began to watch each other. It watched
me as I watched it. And thus the Empire Series was born - a Manhattan love
story. Even though Ive moved away, the empire and I still smile at each
other.
As you can see, Ethel is a very playful artist. Ethels paintings bring the
size and strength of the empire state building to a human level, allowing
the building to take on its own persona. One begins to feel empathy for the
building and the power bestowed upon it.
