In Picture This! - an installation consisting of a series of
stereo photographs combined with a selection of
soundtracks - Oliver Hangl offers us a window into the world
of a young man, who appears to be transparent when
pictured. But neither character nor the story are clearly
defined by the artist, who instead encourages an individual,
more filmic perception by proposing a range of possible
soundtracks, whose lyrics may as well function as a script.
With this open narrative, Hangl provides a fragile approach
towards the construction and readability of fiction, in which
the position of the viewer is made central. Picture This! is
an open field of projection. The artist is also planning a
live-performance which can be ordered as well.
Austrian artist Oliver Hangl originally started his career in
1993 as an actor and stage designer for theatre, film and
TV. Since 1995, he has been working as a visual artist,
exhibiting throughout Europe. In much of Hangl's work the
construction and perception of images and identity are
explored in various media, such as performances, films,
videos, music and - more recently - site-specific multimedia
installations. In his projects, he regularly switches his position
between artist, actor, producer or director, so that quite
often, musicians, other artists, actors or craftsmen are
commissioned to contribute. Oliver Hangl was born 1968 in
Grieskirchen, Austria. Today he lives and works in Vienna.
