The Espai 13 has gained a reputation as a space committed to showing the work of artists exploring new aspects of contemporary art. Following the trend set in the last cycle, this season’s participants have already exhibited on many occasions in art centres around the world, they are at interesting stages in their careers and they will be presenting works of an acknowledged maturity.
This cycle is concerned with art and play, two concepts that are and always have been necessary in all epochs and all civilisations. As children, we learn about the world through play, and at every stage of our life we need time for play so that new rules can take over from those that govern our everyday family and working life. Art is therefore a very serious adult game.
Following this line, Grazia Quaroni introduces six young contemporary artists who are already the authors of important projects and for whom the idea of play and the pleasures of creation are fundamental actors. Their proposals run from painting, installation, sculpture and video to more conceptual media, but they all demonstrate how artistic concerns can be treated playfully without losing any of their depth. The artists taking part in the cycle are Xavier Veilhan, Daniel Chust Peters, Grazia Toderi, Aernout Mik, Thomas Huber and Vik Muniz.
