"Division as Structure: Drawings and Reliefs from Paul Mason "
2001-10-26 until 2001-11-26
Bauhaus Archiv, Museum für Gestaltung
Berlin, , DE Germany

The drawings and marble reliefs simply explore the division of space as the foundation of structural rhythm. The working principles of the medieval Bauhütte share an interest with the Bauhaus in the metaphysical relationships between the point as centre, line as measure, and the plane as the beginning of projected volume as outlined by Paul Klee in his notebook The Nature of Nature. The work is a contemporary artistic response to these ideas which have been influential in both the Bauhaus movement and European Gothic architecture.

The drawings establish various formal rhythms of marks based on geometrical forms such as the square, triangle, hexagon, and pentagon, with endless potential for different forms and structures. As increasingly the patterns break down they become organic, contrasting still areas with points of energy and volumes of space as in motion.

The marble reliefs explore simple divisions of the rectangle by the diagonal with an increasing number of lines. The second set of three reliefs begins to explore these patterns in relief, the surface texture caused by the marks of the chisel and the process of carving.
