Homage to Van Gogh: International Artists Pay Tribute to a Legend honors Vincent van Gogh’s artistic activity in Arles, France. The exhibition is organized by the Art Capital Group through the cooperation of the Foundation Van Gogh, Arles and includes 70 works by such internationally recognized artists as David Hockney, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Larry Rivers, James Rosenquist and Robert Rauschenberg.
The collection was started in 1985 with the intention on fulfilling Van Gogh’s hope of forming a community of artists in Arles, France. Little evidence remains of Van Gogh’s residence in the city. None of the paintings made during Van Gogh’s “Arles period,” February 20, 1888 to May 8, 1889, are in Arles. This collection, through the participation of important international artists, testifies to the impact that this city had on Van Gogh and subsequently the impact Van Gogh had on the art world.
