Indepth Arts News: "The Stamp of Impulse: Abstract Expressionist Prints" 2001-11-18 until 2002-01-27 Cleveland Museum of Art Cleveland, OH, USA
This is the first comprehensive exhibition to examine the impact of Abstract Expressionism on printmaking in America. In the decade following World War II, the art world's center shifted from Europe to America where a new style developed based on surrealism and improvisation. The Stamp of Impulse features 100 prints made from 1942 to 1975 that survey the mid-century's diverse approaches to printmaking and its stylistic and technical experimentation.
The prints range from small drypoints to mural-sized screenprints and lithographs. Masters in New York, such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Adolph Gottlieb, are included, as well as printmakers like Richard Diebenkorn and Nathan Oliveira who worked in San Francisco — a lesser-known center of abstract expressionist exploration.
