"Milton Avery: The Late Paintings"
2001-11-30 until 2002-01-27
Milwaukee Art Museum
Milwaukee, WI, USA

One of the foremost American modernists, Milton Avery (1885-1965) is renowned for a visual agility that delicately conjoins realism and abstraction. Milton Avery: The Late Paintings will include more than 50 of the artists finest oils selected from public and private collections.

This will be the most comprehensive consideration to date of Avery’s late work; it will provide a new generation of viewers with the opportunity to see many of his largest canvases created between the late 1940s and the early 1960s.

While this particular body of work demonstrates qualities for which Avery is widely recognized – his sense of color and a noticeable tension between realism and abstraction – it also provides evidence of his important yet often overlooked role in the evolution of abstract expressionism.
