"Poignant Pictures"
2001-12-01 until 2002-01-06
Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery
Birmingham, , UK

Pictures of endangered species go on show at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery on 1st December until 6th January 2002 in the popular BG Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition.

This year's winner is UK photographer Manoj Shah. His moving image of a female orang-utan clasping her infant was taken in Gunung Leuser National Park, Sumatra where populations of wild orang-utans have plummeted by 50% in the past 10 years. The image is a striking reminder of the vulnerability of these critically endangered animals.

Wildlife film-maker Simon King, one of the Judges, says. This image is hugely accessible and appealing and has tremendous pathos. . This outstanding exhibition of winning and commended photographs covers all areas of plant and animal life. Images show a cross section of the life of animals from the thought-provoking image of a panda locked in a pen to fun with pictures of surfing penguins and playful pine martins.
