"Lyndal Jones: Up to and including...Deep Water/Aqua Profunda"
2001-12-05 until 2002-01-28
Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney
Sydney, , AU Australia

Direct from the 49th Biennale of Venice, Lyndal Jones' multi-screen video installation Deep Water/Aqua Profunda opens for the first time outside of Venice. One of Australia's foremost multidisciplinary artists, Lyndal Jones was chosen by the Australia Council as the sole Australian exhibitor at the 2001 Biennale of Venice.

Jones' work Deep Water/Aqua Profunda was created specifically for the Australian pavilion at the Biennale and will form the basis of her exhibition at the MCA. This exhibition will be complimented by a number of earlier works by Jones including The Prediction Pieces (1981-1991) drawn from the MCA's Contemporary Art Archive, and From the Darwin Translations: Spitfire 1 2 3 (1996).

Based on footage shot in Venice and on Sydney Harbour, the five large video projections of Deep Water/Aqua Profunda blend a collage of voices in English and Italian with layers of sound and images, drawing parallels between Venetian canals and the activity of Sydney's Circular Quay. The work depicts a meshing of languages and cultures, and examines the watery images that link Venice and Sydney, two cities dependant on ferries and vaporetti.

Jones, who is best known for her distinctive conceptual works incorporating performance and projected still and moving images has been exhibiting and making art in various forms since the late 1970s with her work spanning film, performance, music and experimental painting. She has had numerous solo exhibitions both in Australia and overseas, including shows in the USA, the Netherlands, Japan, Korea, Germany, and the UK, and her work has appeared in both the Melbourne International Biennial in 1999, Perspecta in 1997 and the Biennale of Sydney in 1996. In recent years she has been Artist in Residence at ARTEC, London (1999-2000), an Art Fellow in Media at the University of Paisley, Scotland (1997/8), and received the prized Australian Artists Creative Fellowship (1992-1996).
