"Not Quite Myself Today: Video Works by Eight Artists"
2001-12-15 until 2002-03-03
ASU Art Museum
Tempe, AZ,
USA
While the artists included in Not
Quite Myself Today most definitely
have a personal presence in their videos,
their work is not synonymous with their
true selves or with their chosen role as
artists. Rather, their work reflects an
interest in how perceptions about artists
in general are formed - not only by others,
but also by the individual artists themselves.
The works in the exhibition address the
stereotypes, processes, development and
struggles associated with being an artist in
today's media-competitive world. They explore
a variety of lingering questions with respect
to artistic identity: Who am I?; how do
others perceive me?; how did I get this way?;
and who do I wish I could be?
The artists included in this exhibition are Alex Bag, S.E. Barnet, Sanford Biggers, Matt Marello, Jennifer Reeder, Guy Richards Smit, Jennifer Zackin. Kerry Tribe provided the original inspiration for this exhibition with her work Double.
Not Quite Myself Today is supported in part by Friends of the Arizona State University Art Museum.
