Mónica Alonso (b. A Fonsagrada, Lugo, 1970) creates a disturbing world of
spaces, whose boundaries are drawn by color and function – by a tight internal
logic which speaks to us of therapies, dreams, relaxation and wakefulness. Hers
is a mental, while at the same time tactile, work unparalleled in the Galician
art scene, where it stands out due to its highly individualised character.
In
Monica Alonso’s works color acquires new qualities and it often becomes a
symbol for different states of mind, creating aseptic spaces where nothing is
accidental. The poetic stance of her wall-reliefs contrasts with the mixture of
assertion and uncanniness suggested by her formally clean spaces, which are
contaminated by light and sensations. Mónica Alonso builds therapeutic spaces, whose qualities are re-stated through precise control of their (physical and
emotional) elements. She uses models because they allow her to dominate her
working field, and also because scale can –and it often does– arouse the
viewer’s curiosity. It is precisely her use of scale with restrictive purposes in
relation to shape and color that reinforces the, eventual, view of her work as a
laboratory of ideas.
