"Truth and Lies by Jillian Edelstein"
2002-02-12 until 2002-03-02
Association of Photographers Gallery
London, , UK United Kingdom

In April 1996 an extraordinary process began in South Africa. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission, under its chairman Archbishop Tutu, held its first public hearings to investigate over thirty years of human rights violation under apartheid.

Encouraged by the possibility of amnesty, more than 7,000 perpetrators came forward to confess their crimes, and hoping for justice around 20,000 victims made statements. For four years Edelstein travelled South Africa and documented the process.

The exhibition combines powerful portraits with testimonies and is a poignant reminder of what happened to human lives as well as providing some hope of reconciliation.
