"Call to Artists: Community Exhibitions Program"
2002-02-20 until 2002-04-26
Cairns Regional Gallery
Cairns, QL, AU

Cairns Regional Gallery is calling on Far Northern artists and art organisations to apply for an exhibition through the Community Exhibitions Program. The program, which calls for applications annually, provides locally practicing artists and art organisations with the opportunity to exhibit their works at a professional Gallery and attract local, national and international visitors and feedback.

Community Exhibition Program Application Handbooks for 2003/04 are available from Cairns Regional Gallery from Monday February 11th, with the deadline for applications, April 26th.

All applications will be assessed by the Community Exhibitions Program Panel, which is comprised of representatives from a cross-section of visual arts organisations, including the Cairns TAFE, Cairns Art Society, Cairns Potters Club, Kick Arts, James Cook University and Cairns City Council.

The Gallery's Exhibitions Manager Michael Marzik said the Community Exhibitions Program was established in 1997 in recognition of the breadth and diversity of arts practices in Far North Queensland.

Cairns Regional Gallery recognises the wealth of talented artists living and working in Far North Queensland and through the Community Exhibitions Program we provide local artists with the opportunity to showcase their work at a professional Gallery, Mr Marzik said.

Last year the Gallery hosted 31 exhibitions, 24 of which featured the work of local artists; that equates to over 77% of the Gallery's 2001 exhibition programming being committed to local content, he said.

Atherton Tablelands artist Josie Lowerson, who exhibited at the Gallery through the Community Exhibitions Program in 2001, said her first-time experience with the program had been very successful.

It was a very good experience as the staff were very professional and co-operative in all aspects, Ms Lowerson said.  Everything ran smoothly due to good communication and enthusiastic assistance.  It was a positive experience for my first exhibition in Far North Queensland.

All interested artists, art and community groups are encouraged to apply.  For more details concerning the Community Exhibitions Program, or to receive a copy of the Application Handbook, please contact the Exhibitions Manager at Cairns Regional Gallery on (07) 4031 6865.
