"Communicative Place: Aya Iguchi, Matias Ring, Julia Schnable"
2002-03-16 until 2002-03-30
Free Gallery
Glasgow, , UK United Kingdom

A collaborative exhibition and event project by three artists, which invites the audience to take an active role in the collaboration, in order to remove barriers for conversation and make the space transparent. These currently Scottish based artists, Aya Iguchi (Glasgow) Matias Ring and Julia Schnabel (both Edinburgh) are combining their talents for the first time.

Aya Iguchi curated the exhibition Haiku Installation as part of Japan 2001 Festival. Matias Ring was selected for Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2001. Julia Schnabel performed at the most recent Venice Biennale with William Furlong.

Iguchi initiated the project in inviting Ring and Schnabel to exhibit in Glasgow. In developing the project, such was the synergy between artists and curator that the artists in turn invited the curator to exhibit with them.

Established in 1997, the very raw original cellar and bunker like alcoves of Free Hair Salon provided many of Glasgows emerging artists and curators with their first exhibition outside of college and/or first solo show. The informality of the spaces fused many collaborations and inspired many cross over music and performance events. For example - Marianne Greated and Sorcha Dallas - the dynamic duo behind Switchspace first worked together here.

Free Gallery is situated in Glasgow s Merchant City arts quarter just yards from hundreds of artists studio spaces and many other cultural venues such as Transmission Gallery and the Tron Theatre.
