"Can Gravitation be Cancelled: An Artistic Experiment by Monica Sand"
2002-04-04 until 2002-04-04
Alvsborgsbron - the major bridge in the harbour
Gothenburg, ,
SE Sweden
In an artistic project by Monica Sand in collaboration with Chalmers
Technical University, Gothenburg, and University of Gothenburg, a 45 meter high swing will be suspended from Alvsborgsbron - the major
bridge in the harbour in Gothenburg, Sweden!
Gravitation is one of the boundary conditions of our lifes. We cannot
fly or levitate from the earth. We are kept in place like magnets. To
swing is one way to oscillate between increased weight and close to
zero-weight. Children love to experience this sensation in a swing.
Swings are also pendulums, which measure time. Each swing has its own
characteristic time, depending on the length of the ropes. By making the
swing extremely high the interval between the oscillations becomes
longer, which gives more room to experience and observe.
April 4, 6-11 pm.
One of the evenings of the swing-project the public will have the
opportunity to follow the work with the swing. It will be a meditative
performance where the whiz of the swing is all you can hear, the lights
from the harbour and the long pendular motions of the swing is what you
see in the wide space under the bridge. The ropes and dancers will be
illuminated.
