Indepth Arts News: "Anne Noble: States of Grace" 2002-05-25 until 2002-08-11 City Gallery Wellington, 360-Michael Hirschfeld Gallery Wellington, , NZ
Long recognised as a major figure in New Zealand photography, Wellington artist Anne Noble has in the last decade come increasingly to the fore as a major mid-career artist, regardless of medium. States of Grace draws together the many major photographic series in Noble’s oeuvre, focusing on the unfolding connections of theme and effect.
Noble’s work explores a wide range of social, ethical and poetic issues—from landscape to religion, from the personal to the political. Throughout, her art is characterised by its intense formal beauty, and its enrichment of documentary models of photography with symbolic and poetic qualities. The exhibition features between 80-100 photographs from Noble’s major photographic essays, with selected photographs from additional essays to draw out thematic connections between them. States of Grace also includes a body of new work created by the artist for this exhibition.
States of Grace is organised and toured by the Dunedin Public Art Gallery. Exhibition tour is sponsored by Crown Relocations.
