"Marti Friedlander: Photographs"
2002-05-31 until 2002-08-11
City Gallery Wellington, 360-Michael Hirschfeld Gallery
Wellington, ,
NZ
This is the first comprehensive survey exhibition of photographs by Marti
Friedlander, one of New Zealand's most acclaimed photographers. Organised by the
Auckland City Art Gallery, it brings together the extensive range of photographs
created over a period of forty years by this senior artist.
Friedlander's visual records of cultural change have long been celebrated. The
first camera-artist to independently document post-war New Zealand, her work
builds a remarkable visual portrait of New Zealand character and maturing
identity. Based around several key themes including protest and demonstrations,
the changing nature of Maori society, the achievements of artists and writers, and
the character of New Zealand and Pacific society, Marti Friedlander-Photographs
reveals a fascinating exploration and celebration of human life.
Marti Friedlander-Photographs is a touring exhibition organised by the Auckland
Art Gallery. The exhibition is supported by Creative New Zealand and sponsored
by Aalto Colour, and the tour is sponsored by Spicers Strategic Financial Advice.
City Gallery Wellington is managed by the Wellington Museums Trust, with
major funding from the Wellington City Council.
