"Beau Geste : Abstract Paintings in Torroella di Montgri"
2002-06-29 until 2002-07-21
Michael Dunev Art Projects
Torroella de Montgri, , ES Spain

The contemporary art space Michael Dunev Art Projects in Torroella de Montgrí (Girona, Spain) is pleased to present Beau Geste, a group exhibition dedicated to non-representative painting that will take place at the gallery between the 29th of June and the 21st of July, 2002. This exhibition can be characterized (begging Mr. Alberti’s pardon) as an homage to painting. Each of the artists presented here has developed, throughout their respective and distinguished careers, a proper language, rich, palpable and evocative, that manifests an immodest joy toward the art of painting.

Eschewing at first glance obvious pictorial references, these works celebrate the vital gesture that is the basis of all painting, inviting the viewer to participate in a dialogue with each work, sharing at the same time in the mystery of the creative process. The exhibition includes works by the following painters: Ramón Canet, Joaquim Chancho, José Manuel Ciria, Ricardo Mazal, Joan Hernández Pijuan, Manfred Vogel, and Miguel Ybañez.

The Mallorquin painter Ramón Canet exhibits various medium-format works on canvas and paper marked by strong expressive gestures that explore the relation between the positive and negative spaces, the density and the hierarchial relationship of the shapes presented in his collages.  Joaquim Chancho and Joan Hernández Pijuan, two veteran Barcelona-based painters present works characterized by dense impastos that underscore their respective interest in drawing as an integral part of painting.  Chanco creates monumental ‘telephone doodles’, marked by a strong chromatic tension and a rich relief, while Hernández Pijuan uses the landscape as a point of departure, presented with a language simplified to its purest state. Madrid-based José Manuel Ciria presents a vital abstraction with canvases stained by gestures and forms drenched in paint that create a space that is landscape-based and anecdotal.  Although the Mexican-born Ricardo Mazal lived for years in Barcelona, he currently divides his time between studios in New York and Santa Fe (USA).  His new work, represented by two small format canvases, shows oils diluted into washes that suggest a dense and variegated universe.  Manfred Vogel, who divides his time between his native Germany and the studio he keeps in Palma de Mallorca, presents a series of paintings titled “Menu del Dia”,  that describe the artist’s everyday life.  Finally, we present a series of oils on paper and canvas by Miguel Ybañez, resident of Amsterdam and l'Empordà, an exquisite Spanish painter of enigmatic and disturbing expressionist works.
