"I Thought About You: A Unique Public Art Project"
2002-07-07 until 2002-07-12
XIV International AIDS Conference
Barcelona, , ES Spain

For one week, the city of Barcelona will be transformed to reveal the stories, emotions and memories of people lost to AIDS which exist throughout its streets, buildings and public areas. An official program of the XIV International AIDS Conference, I Thought About You is a unique public art project which has gathered people's memories of loved ones lost to AIDS and the locations where they occurred and will reveal the memories that specific locations throughout the city hold from July 7-12, 2002.

On July 7, a series of plaques, each one containing a memory involving someone lost to AIDS, were installed throughout Barcelona, each plaque placed at the location where the memory took place.

"I Thought About You reveals the stories, emotions, memories and moments that locations throughout Barcelona contain," says Scott G Burnham, creator and director of I Thought About You. "I hope that when people come across a plaque in their day-to-day activities and discover that a place they pass each day contains a memory of someone who is no longer here because of AIDS, not only will an awareness of the humanity contained within the shared spaces of the city form, but a shared concern will grow as people realize how the epidemic has woven itself into the narrative of the city."

Memories used at the launch of the project have been gathered from Barcelona residents and individuals worldwide through a series of public campaigns conducted by Burnham and the International AIDS Conference's cultural program, RAUXA. Activities will also be conducted during the week of the conference to encourage participation and further sharing of memories. Additional plaques will appear throughout the city as memories are shared over the course of the week.

Individuals worldwide can participate and share memories of someone who has been lost to AIDS via the project website http://www.ithoughtaboutyou.com. Memories connected to cities other than Barcelona will be displayed in a special exhibition area at the conference. Following the conference, the website will be re-launched as an online destination for memories connected to specific locations to create a new form of expression and remembrance throughout the cities of the world. I Thought About You will also be conducted in other cities following the conference.
