"From The Pages Of Our Minds: S’thembiso Shongwe and S’thembiso Sibis"
2002-07-17 until 2002-08-06
BAT Centre
Durban, , ZA South Africa

The exhibition is entitled "From The Pages Of Our Minds". It is a two-artist exhibition by painters S’thembiso Shongwe and S’thembiso Sibisi. The exhibition is a collection of Urban Landscapes, of people in different settings celebrating life as well as realist art.

Shongwe’s talent was spotted early on by his mother who encouraged and nurtured it by supplying him with materials for his art and later enrolled him for Saturday Art Classes at the Durban Art Workshop. Shongwe then got himself a sponsorship to do a bridging course in Art and Design at the M.L. Sultan Technikon.

Shongwe draws a lot of inspiration from Rastafarian Culture. This shows itself in his magnificent use of their primary colours which are red, green and yellow. Through this inspiration he has been able to develop a style that captures the rhythm, culture and pace of Urban versus Rural life. Shongwe has won quite a few accolades and competitions for his art.

This will be his second exhibition at the Bat Centre. Between the two of them, these artists have never failed to reveal the gist and humour of their everyday life experiences as well as the world as they see it. While Shongwe is known for his detailed Urban Landscapes, Sibisi is big on realism art, which sometimes incorporates the influence of surrealist art.

As a collaboration, this exhibition is sure to be an explosion, it is thus fitting that it is entitled "From the pages of their minds". It will be an exhibition showing two distinct individual styles that co-exist in the name of art.
