Indepth Arts News: "Doing Time In Detroit" 2002-07-20 until 2002-08-18 Detroit Contemporary Detroit, MI, USA United States of America
An exhibiting artist since the late 1980's, Kai Kim has been painting and
creating installations in Detroit since 1996. The body of work created in
this time is extensive as a result of her process, which she says is her way
of counting time. "The act of painting becomes ritualized in a monastic
routine. I started my One-A-Day Paintings using enamel paint on metal
surfaces, twelve years ago. I ate a can of sardines a day and I painted a
saint inside a can a day for two weeks."
She has continued this approach
in her other projects such as, Daily Eating Habits: 61 paintings in 61
consecutive days. Kim‚s relationship with ritual and time is uncovered and
discussed in a different light when she explores the world of serial killers
and prison inmates.
Kim‚s exploration in theme is dynamic as her pious
subject matter of religious icons and good versus evil archetypes always has
a contemporary twist and an occasional tongue-in-cheek commentary.
