"Puvis de Chavannes"
2002-07-28 until 2002-10-27
National Gallery
London, , UK United Kingdom

The exhibition unites the National Gallerys version of Puvis de Chavannes ‘Beheading of Saint John the Baptist’ of about 1869 with the smaller, more highly finished version in The Barber Art Institute, University of Birmingham.

Joining them are preparatory studies and drawings for the composition, as well as a beautiful series of drawings for individual figures. They help trace the genesis and elaboration of one of Puvis most ambitious religious compositions, and show how he imbued the National Gallery version with personal significance.
