The Salt Lake Art Center street level gallery opens August 16th with a one-man exhibition by Victor Kastelic.
Born in Salt Lake City but residing in Italy for more than a decade, Kastelic comes home to present a virtual Cloudburst of imagery in a project that includes more than 200 drawings, four big canvases and numerous large-scale images drawn directly onto the gallery walls.
The title refers not only to the whirlwind of drawings created between paper, canvas and wall but as the artist states: Cloudburst is an enormous cumulus of imagery - free of the filters, schemes, limits and rules that I normally apply to my paintings…
The drawings gathered in large, cloud-like groups, the walls painted in zones of gray and vibrant colors where wall drawings appear and disappear and the more or less finished paintings, involve the visitor in an art-making process that seems to have no end.
…Ive exposed myself to a storm of images that have always influenced me in a number of ways but have been generally overlooked in my artwork. This exhibit is about the process of sorting them out.
The multitude of subjects, whether childhood memories from a 1960s American Suburbia or this mornings front-page photo of the latest Wall Street swindler, seem to post no limits as to origin or timeframe: images as icons of everyday life of both past and present. Post- industrial urban landscapes blur into the wide forested horizons of the Intermountain West. Faded family photos share space with modern day, Italian gangsters and politicians. Miserable characters extracted from Goyas The Disasters of War meet Tex Willer and John Wayne. Playboy bunnies and sewing machine ads. Baseball players and late-night movie heroes…
Time slips back and forth through the recent past of cinema, advertising and television to the frustrated daily routine of the moment. The comforting American Dream interrupted by the violent thunder of everyday life.
An unforeseen cloudburst that threatens to last forever.
