"Marc Fischer: Paper Trails (Going Through Your Garbage)"
2002-08-27 until 2002-09-07
Gallery 400, University of Illinois at Chicago
Chicago, IL,
USA United States of America
Hundreds of pounds of paper destined to be recycled by UICycle are dumped
in the Gallery. Sorting the paper into stacks of newspapers arranged by
title, wall displays of continually botched photocopies, past date event
flyers sorted by color, and mounds of crumpled balls of emails or letter
drafts, Marc Fischer goes through the university's papers, marking aesthetic
categories and revealing behavior patterns in the university's waste.
Fischer's project is the first of six in Gallery 400's fall series "At
the Edge" initiated to present new works that are difficult to show in
commercial spaces, that extend a working artistís practice, and/or push
the boundaries of art experimentation. Other artists in date order are
Shane Huffman, Rena Leinberger, Stephen Lapthisophon, Culture and
Conflict, and Valerie Hegarty.
