"Four by Three: The Forrestalls -- Scenes From Two Kitchens: The Hiscox Sisters"
2002-09-06 until 2002-09-29
Gallery 78
Fredericton, NB, CA Canada

The forces and conditions required to produce creative talent in an individual has long been a subject for scholarly speculation but the phenomenon of why certain families produce more than their fair share of talent is rarely explored. Gallery 78 is offering two new exhibitions which open Friday, September 6. Both exhibitions encourage the viewer to speculate by focusing on the artwork of two families.

The title "Four by Three: The Forrestalls" refers to the number of artworks and the number of family members participating from this illustrious Maritime family. Tom Forrestall, the father, is a world renowned artist whose exquisitely rendered egg tempera and watercolour paintings depict his unique and captivating vision of the world. This exhibition marks the first time the powerful expressive figurative oil paintings of Renee Forrestall, the daughter, have been exhibited in Fredericton. She has been rapidly garnering national attention for her art. Frederictonians are of course familiar with the intense iconic still life art of local artist William Forrestall, the son. Though stylistically divergent, the work of these three is cohesive on a deeper, perhaps spiritual, level. According to William, coordinating three Forrestall family members into one exhibition in one city is a minor miracle. This exhibition presents, therefore, an opportunity not to be missed , to compare and contrast the work of these three preeminent Maritime artists.

"Scenes From Two Kitchens: The Hiscox Sisters" is an exhibition to introduce and showcase the paintings of these two talented young artists. Jennifer, based in Sussex, and Diane, a successful Ottawa artist, have been enjoying the collaborative process despite their geographical distance. They have chosen scenes of domesticity, highlighting the kitchen, for these watercolour , oil and acrylic paintings. They present a world very familiar to many stay at home parents, and other house bound individuals in a very refreshing and intriguing way. Their subject matter includes the interior of the fridge, the kitchen drawer and even the bathroom. One can therefore not only compare style and artworks but also shopping proclivities!
