"BitterKomix/Komix Galore"
2002-10-14 until 2002-11-02
Association for Visual Arts
Cape Town, , ZA South Africa

The BITTERKOMIX exhibition will be the third in a series of seven exhibitions entitled COMIX GALORE, organized by Bitterkomix, the French Institute of South Africa, Pro Helvetia (Arts Council of Switzerland) and the Witwatersrand Technikon. It showcases the works of various comic artists from South Africa, Europe and Reunion in a series of exhibitions which will be shown in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban over several months.

BITTERKOMIX NO 1 was founded and published in 1992 by co-editors ANTON KANNEMEYER (born Cape Town, 1967) and CONRAD BOTES (born Ladysmith, 1969), then postgraduates of the Graphic Design Department of the University of Stellenbosch. Both have since received their Masters Degrees in Fine Art, cum laude, from Stellenbosch University, and both have lectured extensively in the field, mainly at the Universities of Pretoria and Stellenbosch and at the Pretoria and Witwatersrand Technikons. Both have exhibited widely throughout the country and in Europe, and both have published comprehensively since 1990.

Since 1992 BITTERKOMIX has been published annually and has hosted a variety of famous contributors. This Afrikaans comics anthology is not only distributed in South Africa, but has a large following abroad, particularly in the Netherlands and Belgium, and in France which hosts the biggest comics festival in Europe, at which BITTERKOMIX is represented.

The current COMIX GALORE exhibition at the A.V.A will also see the launch of THE BEST OF BITTERKOMIX VOLUME TWO. Original cover artwork, original drawings from the pages of the numerous BITTERKOMIX comics, silkscreens, etchings, lithographs, illustrations and paintings will be on exhibit. Although most of the work on show is that of Conrad Botes, Anton Kannemayer and Mark Kannemeyer, the work of a recent contributor to BITTERKOMIX, Claudette Schreuders.
