Violence / Silence showcases work curated from two simultaneously run shows held during July 2002. Violence – was located at the NSA Gallery in Durban and Silence - in and around Nieu Bethesda, Karoo. The aim of the exhibition is to explore the diversity of associations evoked by the two concepts.
While the terms might produce some knee-jerk responses in the context of South Africa, they are layered with many other possibilities. The exhibition is not intended to prescribe meaning in relation to political circumstance, but is seen as an arena where such terms might have a private and intimate meaning, or mask and engage with one another in unexpected ways.
Greg Streak has curated this exhibition, which falls under the umbrella of the Pulse Project, an artist-run initiative lead by Streak. Streak was asked to act as guest curator for the !Xoe Biennale in Nieu Bethesda.
The international contingent of artists includes:
Adriana Lestido (Argentina), Ivan Grubanov (Serbia), Bharti Kher (India) and Marco Paulo Rolla (Brazil)
South African artists: Carol-anne Gainer (Durban), Luan Nel (Johannesburg), Paul Edmunds (Cape Town) and Greg Streak (Durban).
