The Triton Museum of Art is pleased to present New Works by
California Artists: Mitchell Johnson. This exhibition is part of the Triton's continuing
series on New Works by California Artists and features this Menlo Park resident's
large and small oil on linen work of painterly figure compositions reminiscent of David
Park, Richard Diebenkorn and Joan Mitchell.
Mitchell Johnson is an artist who is above all, a colorist. He paints both directly on site and by memory in the studio. His oil on linen paintings are sensitive celebrations of nature, color, place and time.
Johnson, who moved to Palo Alto in 1990 from New York City, has found his
own interpretation of figurative painting. His work shows an interesting melding of
New York Figurative Painting and the art of the Bay Area. His particular use of color
and gesture also shows a strong affinity for 20th century French painting, and are
influenced by his teachers Paul Resika, Leland Bell, Larry Rivers and Robert DeNiro,
Sr.
In addition to being included in over 200 private collections, Johnson's work is in
the permanent collection of 10 U.S. museums. See Mitchell Johnson's webiste atwww.mitchelljohnson.com
for further information about the artist. The Triton Museum of Art is located at 1505
