"Call for Artists: Step into Leonardo's Shoes... Workshop in Drawing from Human Anatomy Specimens"
2003-01-13 until 2003-02-10
University of New South Wales, School of Anatomy
Sydney, NS, AU Australia

This 5-day intensive workshop held 2003-02-10 until 2003-02-14 at University of New South Wales, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Anatomy Sydney, NSW, AU Australia will improve your life drawing. The Faculty of Medicine at the University of New South Wales is providing an opportunity for artists to draw and sketch from anatomical specimens. The specimens are embalmed and professionally dissected body parts from people who have generously donated their remains to the University for study.

The workshops fill a gap in art education under the guidance of artist Susan Dorothea White and anatomist Dr. Brian Freeman, both experts in their field. By discovering what is under the skin, participants improve their skills in rendering the human form.

Topics include muscles, tendons, fascia, joints, bones, movement, expression, proportion, and perspective. Drawing takes place in a spacious, well-lit Anatomy Laboratory, with at least five hours drawing per day interspersed with illustrated talks held in a conference room.

The influence of anatomy throughout art history is discussed with slides of works by artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Rodin, Alice Neel, Hokusai, aboriginal, etc. Course notes with Susan's drawings are provided.

Personalized teaching is structured for all levels in a non-competitive atmosphere, with a limit of 18 participants. The workshops have proved popular among professional artists, sculptors, heads of college art departments, students, and beginners alike.

Susan Dorothea White exhibits internationally and has work in collections around the world. Her work is inspired by the human figure and may be viewed at www.absolutearts.com/portfolios/s/sdwhite. Brian Freeman is Director of Teaching in the School of Medical Sciences, UNSW and lectures in Anatomy.

The 5-day Intensive Workshop will be held from 10-14 February 2003.
