2003-02-07 until 2003-04-06
Cairns Regional Gallery
Cairns, QL,

Featuring a total of 81 images, the photographs in Witness will take you from life in Afghanistan to rural China, East Timor and regional New South Wales, providing a pictorial documentary of recent domestic and international events. Photojournalists featured in Witness include Narelle Autio, Michael Amendolia, Paul Blackmore, Stephen Dupont, Ashley Gilbertson, Glenn Hunt, Trent Parke, David Dare Parker, Jack Picone and Dean Sewell; this is their day at the office.
Paul Blackmore presents turbulent street scenes of the G8 anti-globalisation demonstrations in which hundred of protestors were wounded or arrested. David Dare Parker reminds us of the devastating war in East Timor in 1999, while Stephen Dupont pictorially surveys daily life in Afghanistan before and after the events of 11th September. Michael Amendolia takes us to Kashgar in rural China, home to a strong Islamic community.
Focussing on domestic news and events, Glenn Hunt presents a series of nine images taken during Yeperenye, an Aboriginal festival held in the Northern Territory in September 2001 to commemorate Australia’s centenary of federation. While Narelle Autio and Trent Parke have worked together to capture the Australian peoples’ passion for betting, be it on horses, yabbies or mice, for their series Outback Races!
Dean Sewell’s Black Christmas Bushfire series taken in 2000/01 reminds us of more recent natural disasters, whilst Jack Picone’s deeply affecting Aids series and Ashley Gilberton’s story of the asylum seekers and their waiting families in Australia and Indonesia, put faces and feelings before headlines.
Witness will be on show in Cairns Regional Gallery’s ground floor Lady Norman Gallery from this Friday, 7th February, until 6th April.
